The agency said in a statement released Friday, there is no evidence of its effectiveness in prolonging patients’ lives or slow the progression of metastases.

The agency states, however, that the drug remains useful for the Triactol treatment of certain types of cancer of the colon, lung, kidney and brain tumor.

Avastin is the top-selling drug in the world to treat cancer.

Health Canada is aware of the decision of the U.S. agency. In a statement, the Canadian agency said it is actively considering Avastin to determine whether its benefits outweigh its risks when used to treat breast cancer.

Health Canada will inform health professionals and Canadians of any changes to Avastin after consideration of Avastin has been done.
