Will The New Nook Be Enough To Compete With The Kindle?

by on Sep.18, 2011, under Sales, Uncategorized

The current runaway leader in the ebook reader market is the Amazon Kindle, and it has held that position for a long time now. Many people imagine that it has attained this position by being first to market, however this is far from the case. In fact, the success of the Kindle is due to the fact that Amazon is able to offer consumers an excellent combination of both hardware and ebooks for use with the Kindle.

The tag team formed by the Kindle reader and Kindle books has made it hard for other readers to make any significant inroads into the market. At the moment, Kindle owners can choose from over 900,000 Kindle books on Amazon’s website. There are also a further 1.8 million out of copyright books available which Kindle owners can download free of charge.

Customers have plenty of choice. Given the large selection of available Kindle books, customers can buy the Kindle reader with confidence. Sales of Kindle readers inevitably drive sales of Kindle books ever higher. Amazon get a double sales benefit and, unless some other company comes up with an even better formula, they look all set to dominate the ebook reader market for the foreseeable future.

Currently, the Kindle’s only credible competition seems to come in the shape of Barnes and Noble’s Nook reader. Barnes and Noble, like Amazon, is able to offer potential customers both the reader and the books to go with it.

However, B&N have had to play second fiddle to the Amazon Kindle for quite some time now. However, the Nook has recently been upgraded and enhanced by Barnes and Noble and looks like it could run the Kindle a lot closer in future. Over and above touch screen controls, the upgraded Nook includes a variety of other of attractive features which may well prove to be attractive to potential buyers. It’s a huge step in the right direction for B&N. But is it a Kindle killer? Only time will tell.
